Welding prep
Precisely remove contaminants and oxides from weldments with targeted laser ablation.
Cleanliness Standards in Welding
Achieving the required level of cleanliness is critical in welding. Standards like AWS D1.1 for structural welding dictate specific surface conditions. Laser cleaning allows us to meet or exceed these standards by precisely removing contaminants without affecting the base metal, ensuring optimal weld integrity and minimizing porosity or cracking. This translates to stronger, more reliable welds.
Laser Cleaning Applications in Welding
Laser cleaning offers significant advantages in welding. It eliminates the need for abrasive blasting or chemical cleaning, which can introduce foreign materials or alter the surface properties of the metal. Laser cleaning precisely removes oxides, scale, rust, paint, and other contaminants from weld preps, joints, and even post-weld areas, improving weld quality, reducing rework, and enhancing the overall aesthetics of the finished product.
Materials and Contaminants
Welding involves various materials, including steel, aluminum, and titanium, each with unique cleaning challenges. Steel often suffers from rust, mill scale, and paint residue, while aluminum can develop oxides and surface discoloration. Titanium is susceptible to contamination from handling and processing. These contaminants can compromise weld strength and integrity if not properly removed.
Conventional Cleaning Risks
Traditional cleaning methods pose several risks in welding. Abrasive blasting can create surface roughness and introduce media particles, while chemical cleaning may leave residues or alter the base metal's properties. Both methods generate waste, and chemical cleaning can pose environmental and safety hazards due to the use of harsh solvents and acids. These methods also often require extensive masking and surface preparation.
Z-Beam weld prep Protocols
At Z-Beam, we prioritize safety and environmental responsibility. Our laser cleaning processes are non-contact, minimizing the risk of damage to the base material. We utilize Class 4 lasers with robust safety interlocks and employ trained technicians who adhere to strict laser safety protocols, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Our processes are dry, eliminating the need for water or chemicals, and minimizing waste.
Example Use Case: Steel Weldment Cleaning
A common scenario involves cleaning a steel weldment prior to welding. Mill scale and rust were present on the joint surfaces. Using a 200W fiber laser with a 100mm lens, we scanned the joint area at a speed of 200 mm/s and a pulse frequency of 20 kHz. This precisely removed the contaminants without affecting the base metal. Compared to wire brushing, which was previously used, laser cleaning provided a more consistent and thorough clean, resulting in a stronger, more reliable weld with reduced porosity. The laser process also eliminated the risk of introducing foreign materials or creating surface roughness.
On-Site Consultations with Z-Beam
Z-Beam offers on-site consultations to assess your specific cleaning needs. Our experienced technicians will evaluate your materials, contaminants, and required level of cleanliness. We will then recommend the optimal laser cleaning parameters and develop a customized cleaning plan to ensure the best results for your welding applications. We can also conduct sample cleanings to demonstrate the effectiveness of our technology.
